After more than six months in the Middle East, I am finally home!
It’s difficult to put such a long and unique experience into words. I learned so much while I was overseas and had the opportunity to experience some pretty incredible things. I watched some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets I’ve ever seen, flew in a helicopter, visited places I had only ever read about in the Bible, and witnessed firsthand the incredible capabilities of the United States military.
Of course, not every part of the experience was easy. There were times when things as simple as running water and a good meal were hard to come by. We made do with bottled water, baby wipes, and plenty of MREs. Some days felt like one very long camping trip that I was wildly underprepared for, although I definitely came home with a few new ideas for future camping trips!
Living with so little for more than half a year also changed my perspective on what we have access to back home. I remember walking into my house for the first time and feeling overwhelmingly grateful. After months of living with only the things I truly needed, I looked around and realized I probably don’t need 99% of what I own. At the same time, I developed a completely new appreciation for the little comforts and conveniences that are so easy to take for granted.
When I wasn’t working, I spent much of my time walking, running, lifting weights, or working on school. I completed two college courses and earned a professional certification while I was there, which I’m incredibly happy about.
More importantly, I was fortunate to have plenty of opportunities to talk with Trevor and the kids. My work schedule allowed me to arrange my days so I could usually spend a couple of hours on FaceTime with them. Nothing replaces actually being home with your family, but seeing their faces every day made being so far away a little easier.
There were also a lot of sentimental dates and moments that passed while I was gone. Some of them didn’t feel the way I expected them to, and I’ve realized that I’m okay with that. Life felt different over there. Time felt different. And somehow, I swear the stars looked brighter.
Now, I’m just incredibly happy to be home.
I’m looking forward to getting some much-needed rest, spending time with my family, and settling back into everyday life. After feeling pretty burnt out from work, I’ve found myself turning back toward photography, the thing that has always given me a creative outlet and a sense of comfort. I desperately wished I could have brought my cameras along on this adventure, but photography wasn’t permitted where I was, so those memories will simply have to live in my head.
For now, I’m excited to pick my cameras back up and get back to creating.
I have some really exciting things coming up for Victoria Griest Photography, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
Stay tuned and as always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I’m so happy to be home.
